How to Use Pause Tags to Control Pacing
Good narration is as much about silence as about words. Pause tags let you add deliberate breaks to your script without rewriting it. Here is what each tag does and how to use them well.

What pause tags are
A pause tag is a short code in square brackets that you type into your script where you want the voice to break. When you generate audio, the tag is not read aloud; it is turned into a natural break in the speech.
Under the hood, each tag is converted into punctuation before the text reaches the voice. That is why the result sounds natural rather than like a gap cut into the audio, and also why the exact length of a pause can vary slightly from voice to voice.
Examples you can copy
A tutorial step
"First, open the Settings menu. [pause:short] Then choose Privacy. [pause:medium] You will see three options."
A list
"You will need three things: [pause:short] a pen, [pause:short] a notebook, [pause:short] and ten minutes of quiet."
A reveal
"So which planet has the most moons? [pause:long] The answer might surprise you."
A meditation line
"Breathe in slowly. [pause:2s] And let the breath go. [pause:2s]"
Tips for natural pacing
- Use punctuation first. Normal commas and full stops already create pauses. Add tags only where you want something more deliberate.
- Do not overuse them. A tag after every sentence makes speech sound slow and mechanical. One or two per paragraph is usually plenty.
- Use [pause:long] thoughtfully. Because it can add a slight exclamatory lift, it suits reveals and transitions better than calm, neutral narration.
- Test with your chosen voice. Pause length and intonation differ a little between voices, so listen to a short passage before generating a long script.
You can experiment safely in the pause tag tester or directly in the Studio.
Frequently asked questions
Will the voice read the pause tag out loud?
No. The tag is converted into a break before the audio is generated, so it is never spoken.
Is [pause:2s] exactly two seconds?
No. Custom tags create a trailing pause, but the length depends on the voice. For exact timing, edit the silence in an audio or video editor.
Can I put several tags in a row?
You can, but it rarely sounds better than a single well-placed tag. Test it with your voice before using it in a long script.
Do pause tags work in every language?
Yes. Tags are handled before the text reaches the voice, so they work with every voice and language on the site.
